There was an unusual atmosphere on the 2nd floor, lobby of Widya Kartika University (Uwika) Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Dozens of students dressed up with western clothes. There’s a girld dressed in French style, coat, and even a cowboy hat. To every person who walked by, they offered and invited visitors to see a variety of information on display.

These activities were done in as a final project from English Department’s subject, Western Culture and Civilization. Amelia S, one of the students participating in the exhibition explained that she and her friends tried to explore the western culture, starting from the history, types, behaviors, and various things that influenced it. “We made a trip to western culture like this,” she said as she showed her work.

Besides wearing western clothes, a variety of information about the parts of the western world was also summarized and displayed. They displayed it in the form of chart that could be more easily understood. The ornaments that resembled flow charts were also made attractively. They were organized like wall magazine. Some were framed like pizza. At one of the corner, they also made a background to take picture. This photo booth was made from sheets of newspaper and randomized arrangement of letters.

Rindrah Kartiningsih, SS, M.Sc., M.Pd., lecturer of this subject explained, this was the first event. “As a pioneer, what was presented by the students was interesting enough,” she said. However, she would provide future evaluation so that the exhibition could be better organized.

According to her, a few things would be scored from the exhibition including group performance and individual evaluation. Well, the scoring would be consideration in giving the final score. Students had to make a written report about the process.

The activity was lasted for two days, until December 12, 2012. Hopefully, students could better in understanding the differences and details of western culture with the culture of the east. So, in case, if they jump in and interact with the people of the western hemisphere, the student can adapt and adjust with the customs there.

In addition, with deep exploration, opportunities in business field can be discovered more. “So, there are the essences of literature and languages ??that are managed professionally to foster entrepreneurial spirit,” she concluded.
